Ecological niches of passerines in a changing woodland during the cold period of the year
Spatial foraging niches of small passerine birds in a changing woodland were examined during the cold period of the year near Jagodina (Central Serbia,UTM EP26; 21°16‘E, 43°58‘N). Foraging activities of seven bird species (Great Tit Parus major, Blue Tit Parus caeruleus, MarshTit Parus palustris, Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus, Nuthatch Sitta europaea, Coal Tit Parus ater and Goldcrest Regulus regulus) were studied. Niche structure was described in terms of three niche dimensions: foraging substrate, foraging height and part of the tree. Niche widthwas also examined. At the species level, Great Tit showed the largest total niche breadth. Te niche dimension “tree part” was the most important  factor for species segregation and reducing competitive interactions.
