Winter numbers of woodpeckers and passerines in the vicinity of Jagodina
Abstract: A four-year (2007/08-2010/11) study of composition, frequency of
occurrence and abundance of winter fauna of woodpeckers Piciformes and
passerines Passeriformes was conducted on Đurđevo Brdo Hill near
Jagodina (C Serbia, UTM EP26) using line transect of constant route 1600
m long. Tere were 19 residents, 14 winter visitors, 3 migrants and 1
passage visitor. Te most abundant species with the highest frequency of
occurrence was Great Tit Parus major (index of dominance: 21.4 - 36.6%).
Te highest number of species (28) was observed during the winters
2008/09 and 2009/10, followed by 2007/08 - 25 and 2010/11 - 24 species.
Te average share of resident birds in the total abundance (by
year)ranged from 60 to 88% (average 70.4%); winter visitors: 12.3 to
37.3% (average 29%); migrants: 0.1 to 1.5% (average 0.4%); passage
visitor:0.4% (average 0.1%). Te most abundant birds by families were
tits (Paridae, Aegithalidae) with 39%, followed by finches
(Fringillidae) - 22%, thrushes (Turdidae) - 16.7%, woodpeckers (Picidae)
- 5.2%, and buntings (Emberizidae) - 2.5%. Main characteristic of the
study area is the dominance of residents, both in number of species (19)
and in the total number of individuals (70%). Changing woodland region,
because of its low elevation and milder and warmer temperate
continental climate, is a winter sanctuary for many species and
populations of birds that come from the north and mountainous regions.
